Being away from home allows me to step outside of boundaries I would normally place for myself.

Like allowing myself to relax and take some time out to smell the roses. And allowing myself to breathe deeply.

Like thinking about what I really want out of my life, and not what I think needs to be done.

Not wasting time on expectations other people place on me, and wondering if I have lived up to them.

Acknowledging relationships for what they truly are, and not making excuses for what they could have been.

Most importantly, I realise what living means to me. And what I can’t live without.

I can only hope that when I return, I would have this shift ingrained in me so deeply, that I will be there, all that I am here.

You know when you left me, I sometimes told myself that you have gone overseas and you’ll be back in a couple of years. I had to psyche myself into this false reality to deal with the pain and grief. This new pain was easier to deal with, lesser in intensity and the stabbing feeling was fleeting.

Now, I’m actually living overseas, and I feel the same pain having left my love back in Singapore. I get scared at times, thinking this love will join you too. It’s a stupid thought, really. I hope.

Not in this plane, and not in the same time zone.

Lonely.

5 months after getting married, we move into our home. It has been a crazy month, packing, chucking and unpacking. Furnishing the home in 3.5 weeks and under 3.5k (yes, it’s possible! Someday I will write a book on it. Or maybe an article. Or maybe just a blog post. pfft.) and getting it into a liveable condition in 2.5 days. We still have a room full of boxes, but I’m not fussed. I have 3 more days to get that in order, before the constants come over for a party and that should be enough. I hope.

I feel settled, calm. Sometimes, I can hear the gentle lapping of waves on the shore. It comes quite suddenly, and I stop and embrace the moment. Changed the job environment as well, and I feel alot lighter. It has been comforting to come back to this place and I hope this will lead me in the right direction.

I have never been one to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In school, I used the opportunity to bake cookies for friends/make flower arrangements/have dinners with friends. The one Valentine’s Day I did celebrate was a double date, and funnily enough, both couples didn’t last for different reasons.

Last year, we had an F4 dinner. Just the usual dinner, nothing special. I thought this was how the Man liked it, and I didn’t put much thought into it. We feel that it’s too commercialised, and besides, there shouldn’t just be 1 specific day to celebrate your love.

Last night, the Man surprised me. He told me that he was preparing dinner. I was expecting a quick pasta dish and told him that I’d make a quick dessert. But I came home to a 3 course dinner. He was so cute, he told me not to change out of my workwear and even went to change into something nice. Pan fried foie gras on a mushroom onion reduction, pan fried cod, grilled vegetables, sweet corn and champ. We ended up stuffing ourselves silly just so we would not waste food. And we had no room left for dessert.

I liked it that we celebrated it in our own quiet way. Just the two of us. In our nest.

The best V day I’ve had so far.

I am finally home.

The weekend was a flurry of activity. Driving up to JB on Saturday to pick up cookies and stuff that we had sent for stitching, and massive cleaning and murrukku making on Sunday. Tonight, I will go back home after work and find myself spending many hours polishing all the prayer room brassware.

This Deepavali will be special for so many reasons, and I am really looking forward to it.

Increasingly, I realise how old my grandparents are and that scares me. My Thatha had a fall last week. He slipped when he was on his way up the escalator. Grandad has always been a very independent person. His daily ritual of going for a morning jog/walk and late afternoon library visit keeps him active, both physically and mentally. Each day, I hear new things about him which impress me. How he reads the news of the CNA website. How he downloads and watches Tamil movies. How he wants to join Facebook. (lol.)

And Ammama’s health hasn’t been all that great too. I guess I am blessed that they were both there to give me away at my wedding. I did not think much about the joy that it brought them, till the very day. Their beaming faces said it all.

My heart aches when I think of a time without them. Till then, I will appreciate each moment that I have with them, and treasure each nugget of information about a time before mine.

So I thank the Gods for another Deepavali that I get to share with my Ammama and Thatha. And my first Deepavali, with the silly, funny love of my life.

Happy Deepavali everyone! May the darkness in your lives be banished and may your hearts be filled with bright, brilliant light that will guide you in all that you do.

Love!

So, my year long project has come to an end (well, almost. Besides picking up the wedding video and printing out pictures for family) and I’m excited about our next project!

Our home.

We’re supposed to get our keys by the end of the year, and I’m starting to look out for inexpensive decorating ideas. We’re thinking of taking our time to furnish our place so we can go easy on the pockets. But I only keep picking out (for now) expensive kitchenware. Like cute Pylones cheese graters. And Kitchenaid mixers.

The other day, Mum and I decided to pop by the Deepavali expo to check out the stalls. And we spent a grand total of 40 minutes picking out curtains. CURTAINS. I didn’t even look at any of the outfits!

I have turned into a housewife.

yikes.

My makeup box disappeared at the temple ceremony.

My BROTHER disappeared at my ROM.

My makeup artist/hairstylist bailed out on my 2 days before my reception, resulting in me having my hair done at the overpriced spa at the hotel, only to have it fall flat 1 hour before I start to greet my guests.

(All in all, I have looked better in family wedding receptions than my own.)

BUT, I had the best 3 weeks of my life.

Starting with my Hen night(Kudos to Shalu!), then the henna party. Unexpected fun at the bangle ceremony. Amazing amazing traditional ceremony (thanks to my KGPG), simple yet enchanting ROM (thanks to Sangee, Veegee, Angel, Kumar and Lavan) and fun fun fun dinner (thanks to KGPG, special mention to my fab reception girlies, Aneh Puvanesh and Darsh!), culminating in my out of this world honeymoon in Maldives.

Alot of things went wrong, but the feeling was just right. And I was very very happy to see the faces (and some, just knowing that they were there even for a while:)) of everyone I loved dearly. I could not ask for more.

Dearest KGPG (Sangee, Veegee, Shalu, Aneh, Darsh, Alva, Nits, Joanne, Shanti, Angel, Kumar, Jayaraj Anna, Durkesh, Durgamu, Shana Bana, Lavan, Chak, Vijey) who have seen me go through so much, I love you many many.

Hugggggggggs.

Mrs Soyabean.

p.s. And love to Shiva and Ganga too!! :):)
